Same Sex Marriage
John McCain is slipping in some polls; creating a sense once again that he is the clear underdog. So what can McCain do to stop this slide? Well, let’s hope he doesn’t strike up the fear parade.
Fear has so often been used in this nation as a tool to get the people to trade off liberties; it is a time aged practiced with a history of success. One of those fear issues has been same sex marriage. The mantra of the conservatives has been to protect the sanctuary of marriage.
Well, I have to admit I am a thirty something, white, heterosexual male and live in the center of the family value movement. I find the objections to same sex marriage baffling. The sounding board for opposing same sex marriage has been it will destroy the value of marriage, interesting because I have been happily married for 13 years. In that time countless same sex couples have lived together, simulating the act of marriage. It seems their decision has had little effect on my happiness.
What has driven this anti-same sex movement is a group of individuals determined to oppose their beliefs on others. Often these are the same individuals who proclaim themselves conservative, less government minded people. However, I am afraid their actions speak an entirely different message.
So, my appeal to John McCain, please do not fear the voters into another movement that will ultimately mean more government intrusion into the lives of the people. My appeal to those that oppose same sex marriage: Stop and think real hard if increasing the police power of the state for self-defined morality is worth it?

I want to thank you for this post as a homosexual, republican, college student who is a McCain supporter! The homosexual population is the only minority that is currently denied equal rights under the law. The ONLY thing that the government has the responsibility to do is to allow me and my partner to have the same legal rights that a heterosexual married couple has, the same tax incentives, same insurance coverage, the same hospital visitation rights, etc. I don’t care if they don’t call it marriage, because that may open up legal battles against the Catholic Church and other private religious institutions that oppose same sex marriage. I wouldn’t go to a church that told me they didn’t support my relationship, and a church that would support it would then have the legal authority to perform a marriage. Furthermore, the government does NOT have the responsibility NOR the authority to encourage others to accept my relationships, that’s my personal responsibility. I am working on a college degree, I have a job, I volunteer. I hope that I can show people that homosexuals can be productive, informed, responsible citizens. If every “minority” individual focused on rising up to equality rather than waiting on Uncle Sam to pick them up then we would get a lot farther!!
