McCain is Right On
Recently I have been hearing the proclamation that a higher gas tax is a sound economic policy. This is a foolish premise, simply because no policy which takes money out of a system with zero return is sound. Taking money away from possible investment only has a negative effect.
Second and perhaps most disturbing is the claim of such a tax benefiting society. This leads us to ask: Who makes up society and who are the taxpayers? Simply, they are one in the same, individuals. In essence what is being done is the taking away of assets from the individual with a proclamation that they are helping the individual. It is a baffling concept which is not found in rational thought. Many people are advocating such a thing and justifying the taking of money through the threat of the state’s police power. That is certainly not beneficial to the individual losing the money.
Lastly, some have made the comparison of the alcohol tax, saving lives by slowing down consumption, to the gas tax, which would reduce the consumption of gas; this is laughable. People were being killed by drunk drivers before the liquor tax and are still being killed. Also, there is no comparison between the choice of consuming alcohol and the need for gas. Drinking is a choice or say recreation, gasoline is a need that is necessary for the workforce, the delivery of goods, the production of goods and many more items. Raising the cost of these acts belongings the entire market, higher beer costs has almost no affect on the economy.
The fact is a lower gas tax is a win for everyone, except perhaps those who seek to control the actions of individuals.
