McCain Questions Gen. David Petraeus
Senator John McCain returns to the role of senator, questioning General David Petraeus about Iraq. The two figures are closely intertwined as McCain has based his campaign on foreign affairs, specifically Iraq.
McCain opened with questions focusing on the military action in Basra. Reports swirled that Iraq did not consent with Petreaus prior to taking action. The general confirmed and denied those reports.
McCain also questioned Amb. Ryan Crocker and the importance of international cooperation.
Of the three candidates, McCain is the most tied into the success in Iraq. The Senator supported the surge after the ‘06 mid-term elections. McCain has developed a campaign strategy with Iraq as the center piece, declaring himself best fit to handle foreign affairs.
Any change to the negative in Iraq will likely hurt McCain’s claims. There is little doubt that McCain’s camp is watching things very closely.
