To Be or Not To Be?
To be or not to be; a conservative that is. That is the question facing John McCain as he enters the always merky and often dangerous waters of the general election.
The self-proclaimed maverick now must decide does he take the road on his right or maintain the course of down the middle.
Pulling him right are the radio talk show hosts who are demanding McCain continue the Reagan path. They seek a pledge of lower taxes and closed borders, along with smaller, less intrusive government.
But on the flip side, McCain believes that his appeal is his barely right of center stance on the issues. He seeks the elusive moderate voters, who often lean more left than right.
Ultimately the road he takes might be made for him. If his opponent is Hillary Clinton, the right is likely to flock to McCain driven by their disdain for everything Clinton. A Clinton/ McCain race would allow McCain to go after the moderate voter. If however, his opponent is Barack Obama, McCain will be forced away from the center in an effort to rally his base.
